As a young nurse in labor and delivery, I still recall the urgency in the room. A baby had just been delivered—tiny, fragile, and born far too soon. I heard the doctor’s voice: “Leave the baby—he’s too small. Help me with the mother!” But his heart was still beating.
Everyone moving – voices commanding various actions, decisions being made in seconds. But amidst the noise, I saw him—so tiny, so still. And yet… his heart was still beating.
Though the medical team had shifted focus on stabilizing the mother, something deep in my soul told me I could not leave him. I could not place him alone in that cold, stainless steel tray—not while his heart still beat. In that sacred moment, I gently wrapped him in a warm cloth and cradled him in my hands. He only lived a few minutes, but in those moments, he was held. He was seen. He was loved.
That tiny life changed mine forever. It etched on my soul a truth I have never forgotten: every life matters, no matter how small.
